Yellowstone National Park is seeking public input on an adverse effect, pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, to the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, a historic building that is part of the Mammoth Hot Springs Historic District. The L-shaped hotel consists of a four-story 1913 guest room wing of the old Mammoth Hotel and a newer two-story front section with lobby and lounge designed by famed park architect Robert Reamer and erected in 1937. As part of an overall seismic stabilization and interior/exterior rehabilitation project for the entire building, the park is proposing to replace 172 one-over-one, double-hung wood windows on the Guest Wing with new wood windows of the same style in order to improve room ventilation and energy efficiency. The park has determined, through consultation with the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office, that the portion of the project that proposes the in-kind replacement of the windows would diminish the integrity of the hotel's historic materials.

This effort would therefore have an adverse effect on the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel historic property, per Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. This law requires agencies take into account effects on historic properties. The park believes other project components of this project would not adversely affect this historic property.
