The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) retains a deed reservation to construct a new highway crossing, which will serve as Highway 61's bypass around the city of Port Gibson. The Federal Highway Administration, MDOT, and the National Park Service worked as cooperating agencies to complete an Environmental Assessment for the project. The new highway crossing will be constructed under the Parkway motor road at an abandoned railroad crossing, however a new bridge will need to be constructed to accommodate the highway. MDOT will also construct a ramp for cyclists traveling the Parkway to access the new highway bypass for a route into Port Gibson.
