From the Superintendent:

Dear Friends,

The National Park Service is preparing a plan to manage the proposed wilderness areas of El Malpais National Monument. The purpose of the plan is to provide the vision, stewardship goals, objectives, monitoring standards, and implementation strategies to preserve and protect the characteristics that comprise proposed wilderness lands at El Malpais, while providing for the enjoyment of those lands by the public. The plan will address lands that are recommended for wilderness designation, lands determined as potential wilderness, and undeveloped backcountry lands that are not within the wilderness boundaries.

A draft Wilderness and Backcountry Stewardship Plan as been prepared with an Environmental Assessment, in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. Alternative management scenarios and the potential impacts associated with those scenarios will be included in the plan and environmental assessment.

Your participation in the planning process is essential to the preparation of a successful Wilderness and Backcountry Stewardship Plan.
