This project will protect the natural and cultural resources of the monument by more clearly delineating trails and diminishing off-trail impact on cryptobiotic soil, (an important and fragile park resource), and other plant and animal life. Protecting the resources is a vital part of the park's mission.

Trail maintenance will also provide a safer and more satisfying experience for the 100,000 visitors per year. Currently the trail treadways are uneven and present tripping hazards. Due to frequent flooding, portions of the trail are almost completely washed away and several stone steps are loose or missing, greatly increasing the likelihood and severity of injuries. Trail maintenance allows easier access to the overlooks and resources, preventing visitor disorientation. By reclaiming social trails, trimming brush and removing berms the trails become better defined and easier to follow. Visitor safety and satisfaction are key to providing a good visitor experience, another critical aspect of the park's mission.

By replacing deteriorating water bars the trails will remain safely intact for a longer period of time and will protect both the visitors and the resources.
