Provide site improvements for maintenance facility, Ft. Harrison

Richmond National Battlefied Park » Provide site improvements for maintenance facility, Ft. Harrison » Document List

Richmond National Battlefield Park is planning the construction of an approximately 3200 square foot steel building on the Fort Harrison battlefield in Henrico County. The building primarily will serve as a mechanic's shop. It also will provide safe storage for expensive heavy equipment associated with the park's maintenance yard, which is adjacent.

The current maintenance yard buildings are more than 60 years old. The park acreage has tripled in size in the past 15 years, greatly increasing the work and responsibilities of the maintenance department. The facilities have not expanded at the same pace.

The maintenance yard, and this proposed new building, are in the middle of the September 1864 Fort Harrison battlefield as well as 210 feet east of an intermittent stream that empties into a seasonally flooded wetland to the south. They are not located along normal visitor circulation routes, and the new construction will not be visible to the battlefield's visitors. In the autumn of 2008 the park conducted an archeological investigation of the site proposed for the construction of this new building. That work produced no significant cultural features or artifacts; it also suggested that the half-acre project area had lost its visual and archeological integrity through years of associated traffic from the adjacent maintenance yard.

The guidelines for Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act require the park to ask for public comments on projects of this nature. The park also welcomes any environmental or socio economic concerns. Any written comments may be directed to the park through this website, or through traditional surface mail. They will only be accepted during the 30 day period of public review.
