Buffalo Springs Comfort Station Rehabilitation Project

The primary goal of this rehabilitation project is to rehabilitate the Buffalo Springs Comfort Station for public use. This building has been closed since about 1973 due to problems with vandalism and the sewer line.
An ADA accessible toilet stall and lavatory will be installed in both the Men's and Women's rooms. New partitions walls will be constructed to match the existing wood partition system. New toilets and lavatories will replace existing ones. Two new urinals will be installed in the Men's side. Wood windows will be installed in all 12 window wells. The interior walls, ceiling, and partitions will be painted after loose lead paint is removed.
Also, 3,400 feet of existing sewer line will be cleaned and a video will be made to record the interior condition of the line. Repairs will be made to the sewer line and a durable plastic line inserted inside. A septic tank will be installed southwest of the comfort station to catch the solids and allow the water to gravitate through the slip lined sewer. Approximately 3,000 feet of water supply line will be improved or replaced.
A small photovoltaic panel system will be installed to power energy efficient lights inside the men's, women's, and utility rooms. A motion sensor may be used to switch the light on when visitors approach the men's or women's doorway and turn off after visitors leave.
A portion of the historic and abandoned perimeter road and parking area will be utilized as a temporary access. A drainage way will be re-established on the north side of the comfort station.
A contract for an archeological survey of the 120 acre Antelope and Buffalo project area will be completed by February 29, 2008. This archeological survey will help insure that archeological resources are identified and avoided during this project.
