Entrance Area Improvements

Mesa Verde National Park Superintendent Larry T. Wiese has announced the availability of the recently prepared Environmental Assessment for Entrance Station Improvements at Mesa Verde National Park. The document, which describes and examines the impacts of the proposed project, will be on public review from April 23 through May 26, 2009.

This environmental assessment (EA) is a follow-up to one prepared in 2002 for the proposed construction of a Cultural Center at the North Entrance to Mesa Verde National Park. That EA concluded with a Finding of No Significant Impact. The park continues to work on the project and has completed construction drawings for a curatorial facility and is currently in design for a visitor information center. The two components will comprise the Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center. As design on these facilities has progressed, it became apparent that the original 2002 concept needs revision including the entrance road into this facility and an enlarged wastewater treatment.

In addition, alternative locations for entrance stations and associated functions in the entrance area are evaluated in this environmental assessment. The office which supports the entrance functions is an inadequate trailer and does not meet ADA standards or building codes. Alternate locations within the entrance area will be studied for the office, the entrance kiosks, restrooms and winter use sand storage.
