Dall's Sheep Survey

Western Arctic National Parklands » Dall's Sheep Survey » Document List

We will repeat the Dall's sheep survey conducted by Frank Singer in the early 1980's for GAAR, NOAT, KOVA. This is essentially the entire range of Dall's sheep west of the Dalton. For the vast majority of this area, the most recent information we have on sheep populations is from Singer's survey. Amazing in that this could be around 15% of the world's population of Dall's sheep (based on Singer's numbers).

We are planning on doing aerial surveys using low flying fixed-wing aircraft. Tentative plans are to start surveying on 20 June and try to wrap things up around 1 July. Although multiple planes will be involved, ideally we will have them spread around a variety of areas. Hopefully we will have 1-2 planes for at least a portion of the survey at Galbrith, Coldfoot, Anaktuvuk, Bettles, Dahl Creek and Kotzebue.

The National Park Service has approved this project after reviewing it for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
