Rehabilitate Failing Amphitheater Structure in Aquatic Park NHL District

The National Park Service (NPS) is making available for public review the Rehabilitate Failing Amphitheater Structure in Aquatic Park National Historic Landmark Environmental Assessment for San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. The purpose of the proposed project is to provide a safe and usable structure for visitors and park employees and to rehabilitate and protect the cultural resources of the building and the historic landmark district.

The environmental assessment (EA) examines in detail two alternatives: no action and the NPS preferred alternative. The preferred alternative proposes rehabilitation of the amphitheater (bleacher) structures, portions of which are currently being supported by temporary shoring. The project would entail repair, and in some cases substantial reconstruction, of the severely deteriorated visitor-use bleachers, including the structure's accompanying underground offices and work spaces. Work would include removal and replacement of failed concrete and rebar in some areas, and shotcrete repair in other areas, installation of new waterproofing and drain system, replacement of skylights. In addition, repairs would include upgrades for accessibility, and upgrades to facility mechanical and electrical systems to meet building codes.

Because public participation is very important to the success of this project, I ask for your thoughtful evaluation and comment. The EA is available for review on the web site http://parkplanning.nps.gov (search for San Francisco Maritime NHP). Hard copies of the EA are available for review at the Superintendent's Office, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, as well as in the park's Research Library, and in the park visitor center's Collections Discovery Room. In addition to the website, for your convenience, either a CD-ROM or hard copy of the document is available. Written requests for a CD or paper version should be mailed to Superintendent, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, at the address below.

We will be hosting a public meeting on June 22, 2006, from 4-7pm to discuss the project with our friends and neighbors. The meeting will take place in the Bathhouse Building's Bayview Room, located in San Francisco at 900 Beach Street (at Beach and Polk Streets).

Public comments will be accepted until July 7, 2006. You may post your comments electronically at http://parkplanning.nps.gov or mail comments by this date to the following:
