Dear Friend of Badlands National Park:

We have posted the final Environmental Impact Statement/General Management Plan for the North Unit of Badlands National Park for your consideration. This document represents the culmination of several years of planning for the future of the North Unit. It identifies and assesses the various management alternatives and corresponding environmental impacts relative to natural and cultural resource management, visitor use and access, general development, and park operations in the North Unit. The plan replaces an outdated 1982 master plan and will guide park management for the next 15-20 years.

The document analyzes a no-action alternative and three action alternatives:

Alternative A, the no-action alternative, represents the continuation of existing conditions and provides a basis for comparing the other alternatives.

Alternative B, the preferred alternative, emphasizes increased visitor opportunities.

Alternative C emphasizes resource protection and public education.

Alternative D emphasizes protection of resources and use of research to further knowledge of the park.

We expect the Midwest Regional Director to sign a Record of Decision for the final Environmental Impact Statement/General Management Plan in the near future, after which we can implement the plan. The Record of Decision will be posted on the PEPC web site.

We thank you in advance for your attention and we appreciate your interest in the future of Badlands National Park.

Sincerely,
Paige Baker
Superintendent
