Grand Canyon National Park completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the park's Exotic Plant Management Plan which includes the use of integrated pest management (IPM) techniques to control and contain exotic plant species within the park boundaries. The park requested comments on the EA during a public review period from February 24 through March 27, 2009. The park received three comments during the review period.
The EA evaluated two alternatives including a no action alternative that would have continued current exotic plant management. Actions under the preferred alternative (Alternative 2) include 1) use of integrated pest management; 2) increased education, prevention, and collaboration; and 3) increased manual, mechanical, cultural, and chemical controls. This alternative also provides a framework for exotic plant management and will serve as a planning document to guide this type of work for the next ten years.
A Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) was signed on July 16, 2009 by Michael D. Snyder, Regional Director for Intermountain Region of the National Park Service. The Regional Director concluded that implementation of the preferred alternative does not constitute a major federal action significantly affecting the quality of the human environment and is not an action that normally requires preparation of an environmental impact statement (EIS).
