Director's Order #100 - Resource Stewardship for the 21st Century

DO #100 builds on a recently issued NPS Policy Memorandum 16-01- Resource Stewardship for the 21st Century - Interim Policy and draws from ideas presented in the Revisiting Leopold Report. DO #100 details policies and procedures that will guide resource stewardship in the 21st century. When signed, DO #100 will supersede Policy Memorandum 16-01.
DO #100 provides policies that form a new framework for stewardship decision making within the NPS. Climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, land use changes, and other pressures have impacted our parks and other resources we manage. When many of our policies were written, climate change was not a consideration in our decision-making process. To bridge this gap, a new overarching resource stewardship goal has been developed that takes into account our changing environment as we undertake short- and long-term planning, and carry out our stewardship responsibilities. The draft also encourages the integration of natural and cultural resources, and viewing our parks as an integral part of larger networks of protected lands, waters and resources.
