Kissimmee Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (WSRA) Study

Southeast Regional Office » Kissimmee Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (WSRA) Study

On December 29, 2022, through Public Law 117-328, Congress directed the Secretary of the Interior to study the restored segment of the Kissimmee River for possible inclusion into the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System under Section 5(a) of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. The study area begins approximately 16 miles downstream of Lake Kissimmee and ends approximately 15 miles upstream of Lake Okeechobee. The National Park Service is currently conducting this study, on behalf of the Secretary of Interior.

Since the study area is not located within an established unit of the National Park System, the study will evaluate the river for potential designation as a Partnership Wild and Scenic River. In this model, river management is carried out collaboratively with state and local governments, non-governmental organizations, and the National Park Service, which provides administrative oversight and support.
