Elephant Hill Access Road Flood Damage Repair Project

Canyonlands National Park » Elephant Hill Access Road Flood Damage Repair Project » Document List

The project will repair the section of the gravel road that was washed away during a flash flood in October of 2006. The existing 36" diameter culvert was overwhelmed and water flowed over the top of the road and washed away a section of road approximately 100 feet long, 8 feet wide and 2 to 6 feet deep where the road crosses the wash. A second 36" diam. culvert approximately 20 feet long will be installed alongside the existing culvert to double the culvert capacity and prevent the road from being washed away during a similar size flash flood. Approximately 119 cu.yd. of gravel road base material was washed away during the flash flood and will be replaced with the same kind of material that washed away. Rock rip rap will be installed along the downstream side of the road shoulder for approximately 100 feet, to protect the replacement fill from washing away from surface runoff during rain storms and snow melting. All work will be done from the existing road surface. No equipment will need to work in the wash proper. No new road alignment will be necessary. All work will be within the previous footprint of the road prior to the flash flood.
