Proposal to Increase Camping Fees at Four Campgrounds within Sequoia National Park

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks » Proposal to Increase Camping Fees at Four Campgrounds within Sequoia National Park » Document List

The National Park Service is seeking public input about proposed increases to campsite fees at the Potwisha, Buckeye Flat, Lodgepole, and Dorst Creek campgrounds within Sequoia National Park. The increased fees would support the use of a reservation system and also help fund park projects which would benefit park users. This is the first proposed fee increase for campgrounds within Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks since 2003.

The public is welcome to submit written comments from August 22 to September 21, 2013 through this website or by writing to the Superintendent at the address provided below.

If the proposal is approved, fees would be increased starting in May 2014. Campsite rental fees in Potwisha and Buckeye campgrounds could increase from $18 to $22. Campsite rental fees at Lodgepole and Dorst Creek campgrounds could increase from $20 to $22.

With the fee increase, the public would see the following improvements to customer service:
•There would be two additional reservable campgrounds (four total) which would allay concerns about not finding campsites after arrival;
•The use of the reservation system would reduce congestion and user conflicts in Potwisha and Buckeye Flat campgrounds, thus providing less impact on people who are camping from people searching for available campsites.

Two other campgrounds within Sequoia National Park have successfully used the reservation system for 18 years — Lodgepole and Dorst Creek. These campgrounds serve as models for how the reservation system is expected to work in the new locations. Over 42,000 people benefit from obtaining reservations at Lodgepole and Dorst Creek campgrounds each summer (based upon a 3-year average of reserved campsites from 2010 through 2012 for Lodgepole and Dorst Creek campgrounds)

Once the reservation system has been set up for the additional campgrounds, reservations may be made by calling Recreation.gov at 1-877-444-6777 from 10 am to 12 midnight (EST) or at www.recreation.gov (available 24 hours a day). Expanded trip-planning information will also be available on the website.
