On September 9th, 2021, the Colony and Paradise Fires ignited following a significant lightning event over Sequoia National Park. The fires were discovered the following day, September 10, 2021, and a full suppression strategy was implemented. Over the following weeks the fires merged and were re-named the KNP Complex Fire (KNP) which spread throughout September and October.
The final fire footprint covered a total of over 88,000 acres and included private lands, portions of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, the Giant Sequoia National Monument and Sequoia National Forest, Bureau of Land Management lands managed by the Bakersfield Field Office, and the University of California Whitaker's Forest.
The Burned Area Emergency Response and Burned Area Rehabilitation Plan (BAER/BAR) was developed by an interdisciplinary team of resource experts and identifies emergency stabilization and burned area rehabilitation needs resulting from the KNP.
All projects proposed in the BAER/BAR that are prescribed, funded, or implemented on park lands are subject to compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in accordance with the guidelines provided by the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) Regulations (40 CFR 1500-1508). While many actions outlined in the BAER/BAR are covered by existing park NEPA documents, some actions may require additional analyses and documentation.
