Fire Management Plan

Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park » Fire Management Plan » Document List

Aloha,

The Fire Management Plan and Environmental Assessment for Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park are available for your review and comment. This environmental assessment was prepared pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

The purpose of this federal action is to develop a fire management plan and program that utilizes the benefits of fire to achieve desired natural and cultural resource conditions while minimizing the fire danger to park resources and adjacent lands from hazardous fuel accumulations.

In developing the Environmental Assessment, there were three alternatives considered and analyzed. Alternative 1, No Action, would limit park actions to wildfire suppression without an approved Fire Management Plan. Alternative 2, Minimum Management Action, would provide for wildfire suppression with an approved Fire Management Plan. Alternative 3, Preferred Action, includes wildfire suppression, an approved Fire Management Plan and limited use of prescribed fire. I considered Alternative 3 to be the park's preferred alternative for best accomplishing the purpose and need for this federal action.
