LAVA BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT INVITES
PUBLIC REVIEW OF THE WILDERNESS STEWARDSHIP PLAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT

Superintendent Craig W. Dorman announced today that the Wilderness Stewardship Plan (WSP) and Environmental Assessment (EA) for Lava Beds National Monument is now available for public review and comment.

Lava Beds National Monument contains two wilderness units, the Schonchin Wilderness and the Black Lava Flow Wilderness, totaling 28,460 acres. These areas were designated as wilderness under public law 92- 493 in 1972. However until now there has been no management plan to guide the preservation and management of these wilderness areas. This current Wilderness Stewardship Plan attempts to fill this void by providing park-specific guidance on how to maintain the wilderness areas in as pristine a condition as possible.

This plan has been prepared to examine two management alternatives and consequences of each alternative. The EA identifies the preferred alternative (proposed action) which provides the framework with which to deal with management issues arising in the Lava Beds wilderness areas in the future.

The 45-day public review period begins August 7, 2006. Comments will be accepted through September 21, 2006.
