Develop a New Campground at Prisoners Harbor

Channel Islands National Park » Develop a New Campground at Prisoners Harbor » Document List

The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking public comment on the proposal to construct a new campground at Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island.

As proposed in the 2015 General Management Plan, the proposed campground would include rustic campsites with a maximum capacity of 24 overnight visitors. The project is expected to begin late summer of this year.

The updated plan incorporates suggestions from the first public comment period which took place in June and July of 2020. Modifications include an accessible restroom and the addition of an accessible campsite as part of our commitment to making facilities, services, and programs accessible for all.

This new development is an important step in improving opportunities for overnight visitor access to Santa Cruz Island. Through project review, cultural resources investigations, and consultations with Chumash tribal partners and other experts, we have developed a sensitive design that avoids or minimizes impacts to sensitive cultural and natural resources. Therefore, we believe that creating this opportunity will not adversely affect cultural resources, especially those eligible for or listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Your thoughts and comments are an important part of the planning process. We invite you to review this important proposal by viewing information located in the "Document List" section. Please provide any feedback through this website in the "Open for Comments Section" by end of day June 25th, 2021.
