Demolish Sandy Damaged Buildings 119, 120 Sandy Hook Unit GNRA
Gateway National Recreation Area » Demolish Sandy Damaged Buildings 119, 120 Sandy Hook Unit GNRA » Document List
The demolitions are a part of the ongoing effort to recover from Hurricane Sandy. The first floors of the buildings are 3-4 feet below the 100-year-flood elevation, and are in a moderate wave action zone. They were extensively damaged during the storm. NPS considered alternatives to demolition including relocation to higher ground, raising the first floors above the flood level and leasing to an interested party; all of which proved to be economically unfeasible and that demolition was the best option.
The proposed demolitions are subject to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), which requires federal agencies to consider the effects of their actions on historic properties. The NPS has determined that the proposed demolition of buildings 119 and 120 will have an adverse effect on the Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Proving Ground National Historic Landmark District. As required by NHPA, the NPS has consulted with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office, and other interested parties, and has drafted a Memorandum of Agreement to that effect.
The ongoing participation of the public is very important to the park. Please share your comments from February 25 through March 15, 2019 either by commenting on this website or by mail.
