2011 Canal Pride Days - Lock 10 Vegetation Removal Project

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » 2011 Canal Pride Days - Lock 10 Vegetation Removal Project » Document List

The National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal NHP, will hold Canal Pride Days during Spring 2011. This program coordinates volunteer projects to address needed routine maintenance needs within the park. One project will involve vegetation removal from the canal prism at Lock 10.

The purpose of this project is to remove small caliber growth within the canal prism in front of the lockhouse. The need for this project is to return the viewshed to a managed landscape and afford views of the lockhouse from the towpath, and visa versa.

Additional minor pruning of overhanging and encroaching vegetation within the maintained cultural landscape will be undertaken.

This project is similar to the vegetation project undertaken at the Bowles (Little) property at Hancock (PEPC #25240).

Larger scale cutting will be undertaken prior to the volunteer event by qualified park staff. Volunteers will undertake their tasks using small hand tools. Volunteers will remove cuttings.

The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. A memo to the file has been issued, based on previous compliance for project #25240.

The project also meets the National Historic Preservation Act/Section 106 Programmatic Agreement, Streamlined Review Process #1 – Preservation Maintenance and Repair of Historic Properties, and #5 – Routine Grounds Maintenance.
