2008 SCA Summer Trail Projects

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park » 2008 SCA Summer Trail Projects » Document List

The National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal NHP, will have Student Conservation Association (SCA) Trail Crews in the park from June 24 through August 1. During this time, the park's trails coordinator, will be leading these crews in the Palisades District of the park and will undertake some much-needed trail rehabilitation projects. All work is within the footprint of the existing trails or involves minor relocation of trail sections to avoid resource impacts. All drainage areas will retain free movement of water but improvements will reduce hiker impacts within drainage areas. The park is proposing to undertake several improvements at the following trail sites:

- Angler's Inn Spur Trail – work will help better distinguish the trail and add a staircase to improve safety and viability on the trail.
-Billy Goat A Trail, minor relocation the official trail to the right of a stream and build "stepper boxes" though a biologically sensitive area. General improvements throughout to address eroded areas.
-Billy Goat A Emergency Exit Trail – address the 80 foot mud area near towpath with a construction of a turnpike with water flow through passes.
-Lock 19 Loop Trail, the park would like to utilize a more effective social trail as the defined path and construct a stabilizing wall to uphold the trail structure.
- River Trail needs to be resurfaced to reduce mud build-up and make the surface more safe.
-Intersection of Woodland and Goldmine Loop Trails – puncheon walkway to keep hikers out of drainage area
-Catfish Hole – install four check steps to slow sheet flow stormwater runoff.

All of these projects will be supervised and coordinated through the Trails Coordinator for the park.

The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.3 – Routine maintenance and repairs to non-historic structures, facilities, utilities, grounds, and trails.
