The Maryland State Highway Administration will be undertaking the cleaning and repainting of the Potomac River Bridge (American Legion Bridge) of Interstate 495. In order to protect park resources during this project, the National Park Service, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park will issue a special use permit to outline project requirements for work undertaken within park boundaries.

The project will be over lands administered by the C&O Canal NHP, but the project work zone will not cross visitor use areas. All work over the park will be contained per the project contract specification, "Maryland Department of Transportation, State Highway Administration, Contract No. MO5025180." The project is slated to begin Spring 2007.

Air monitoring units will be placed within the park during the cleaning of the bridge. These air units will not interfere with park operations.

The park's Interdisciplinary Team reviewed the project for impacts to natural and cultural resources. The project does not pose any serious or long-term effects to the environmental, historical, cultural, archeological, or visual resources. It meets categorical exclusion #C.3 – Routine maintenance and repairs to non-historic structures, facilities, utilities, grounds, and trails.
