Northern Plains National Heritage Area Management Plan

Midwest Regional Office » Northern Plains National Heritage Area Management Plan » Document List

Dear Friends,

The Northern Plains National Heritage Area is one of the 49 federally designated National Heritage Areas in the United States. When establishing the Northern Plains National Heritage Area, Congress identified the Northern Plains Heritage Foundation as the local coordinating entity. The role of the foundation is to coordinate between partners and facilitate efforts to support, coordinate and manage programs within the heritage area.

To support these efforts, the Northern Plains Heritage Foundation has been working on a management plan that will guide our activities for the next five years. This draft management plan articulates where we are and where we are going. It describes our goals, strategies, and recommendations for accomplishing the heritage area's purposes; the actions and commitments that federal, state, tribal, and local governments, private organizations, and citizens could take to respect, enhance, interpret, fund, manage, and develop the heritage area; and it provides a set of policies to guide the work of the Northern Plains Heritage Foundation.

A key part of the planning effort is the opportunity for the public to be involved by reviewing and commenting on the draft plan. To facilitate this, the foundation is hosting a series of public meetings during the 30-day public review period. During the meetings there will be a short presentation on the heritage area and the draft management plan followed by an opportunity for questions and comments. I encourage you to attend one of the meetings to hear more about the draft management plan as well as exiting opportunities for you to be involved in future activities.

We invite you to any of the following scheduled meetings:

McLean County - February 5, 2018
Burleigh County - February 6, 2018
Mercer County - February 7, 2018
Morton County - February 8, 2018
Oliver County - February 9, 2018

For additional information please check the "Public Meetings" tab on the left of the screen.

How to Comment:

We encourage you to submit comments electronically from January 30 to February 28, 2018, through the website https://parkplanning.nps.gov/NorthernPlainsNHA_Management-Plan

If you prefer to send your comments in hard copy please send them to
National Park Service
Denver Service Center, Planning

If sending hard comments please note that your comments will be most useful if received by February 28, 2018

Next steps:

The foundation will review all comments received and will update the draft management plan based on these comments as appropriate. The revised management plan, including a summary of the comments received and the how they were responded to, will be submitted to the NPS National Heritage Area Program Office in Washington D.C. for final review and then sent to the Secretary of the Interior for approval. Once the plan is approved, the foundation can begin implementing the management plan.

Thank you for your interest in the Northern Plains National Heritage Area. I look forward to hearing from you.
