***UPDATED July 2018***

Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park was authorized by the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018 on March 23, 2018. The act incorporates by reference Section 7134 of Senate Bill 1460, which authorizes the establishment of Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park as a unit of the National Park System "to preserve, protect, and interpret for the benefit of present and future generations the themes of French settlement, vernacular architecture, and community form and farming on the frontier associated with Ste. Genevieve." The authorization includes the following conditions:

"CONDITIONS FOR ESTABLISHMENT - The Historical Park shall not be established until the date on which the Secretary determines that:
(A) sufficient land has been acquired for the Historical Park to constitute a manageable unit; and
(B) the Secretary has entered into a written agreement providing that land owned by the State, the City of Ste. Genevieve, or other entity within the Historic District shall be managed consistent with the purposes of this section."

We have already made progress. During its 2018 legislative session, the Missouri General Assembly passed Senate Bill 907, authorizing the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to convey property in Ste. Genevieve to the United States for inclusion in this unit of the National Park Service. On July 17, 2018, the Midwest Regional Director of the National Park Service approved the acquisition through donation of the property known as the Bauvais-Amoureux House within the boundary of the area identified for the park. This is a positive first step toward establishing this new park unit.

Please see the "Document List" on the right for a July 2018 newsletter about NPS primary roles and proposed next steps at Ste. Genevieve, the full text of the legislation and the accompanying map. Also under "Document List" is the Ste. Genevieve Final Special Resources Study and Environmental Assessment, which is referenced in the legislation.

The National Park Service and Department of Interior will work with state and local entities towards meeting the conditions for establishment of Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park. The establishment of a new national park can take time, as can making a site ready for NPS operation and visitation. We appreciate your continued interest in Ste. Genevieve as the newest authorized unit of the national park system. We will continue to update this page with new information.

Dear Reader,

The National Park Service (NPS) is pleased to announce the completion of the Ste. Genevieve Special Resource Study. The Secretary of the Interior transmitted the final study to Congress on May 6, 2016. The final document is available by following the "Document List" link to the right of this text.

The NPS study team analyzed the rich history of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri to assess the significance, suitability, and feasibility of the resources, and potential area boundaries. The public was invited to comment on the draft study in August and September, 2015. The final study found that portions of the historic district in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, meet the criteria for inclusion in the national park system.
