The project proposes to install a temporary restroom trailer with two handwashing sinks and two toilets at the Crane Flat Ranger Office (Crane Flat RO). This trailer will be used from approximately May to October annually for three years. The Crane Flat RO is located near the Tuolumne Grove parking area along Tioga Road and is operated out of a converted garage known as the "Tucker Shed." Rangers work in this space year-round, but the building has no handwashing or toilet facilities. In the winter months, Rangers have access to restroom facilities in a nearby seasonal housing unit, but in the summer months that unit is occupied with seasonal park employees and rangers may not use it. The proposed restroom trailer is a self-contained unit that will provide consistent access to handwashing and restroom facilities for Crane Flat RO employees during the summer season.
The temporary restroom trailer will be needed seasonally at the Crane Flat RO for approximately 3 years while a long-term planning effort identifies a solution to provide permanent restroom facilities. Multiple long-term solutions are currently being considered.
The trailer will be placed uphill of the Crane Flat RO, between it and a small utility shed. The proposed area is currently being used for storage of trailers and equipment. A pad for the trailer (approximately 25 feet by 20 feet) would undergo minor grading (no more than 16 inches below grade) to level the area. The grading area is slightly larger than the trailer footprint to accommodate for external stairs and to allow walk-around access to the trailer.
The trailer will connect to existing electrical infrastructure at the Crane Flat RO. The electrical box for the ranger office is on the north side of the building and the unit will connect to the trailer via an above-ground standard extension cord. The trailer has a refillable water reservoir as well as a blackwater tank. Water will be connected through a standard, above-ground garden hose. Blackwater will be serviced by an outside contractor as needed, estimated to be one or two times a season. No ground disturbance will be required to connect utilities. During the winter season, the restroom trailer would be stored in El Portal or Hodgdon Meadow at an existing park utility yard.
The park plans to install the trailer in spring 2022 to have handwashing stations and dedicated restrooms in place prior to the summer season.
