The National Park Service, at Cabrillo National Monument, plans to improve the Ballast View Rest Area, located behind the Cabrillo National Monument Visitor Center auditorium. The purpose of this project is to bring the Ballast View Rest Area into compliance with the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standards (ABAAS) while also creating a safe space for visitor experience and use. This project is needed in order to improve visitor access for the mobility impaired, correct unsafe conditions, and provide interpretive programs and demonstrations to more visitors in a safe, accessible environment while maintaining the Mission 66 characteristics of the property.
Specifically, this project involves deconstructing and reconstructing the walkway and plaza to ensure accessible walkways and seating, and constructing a shade structure over the plaza. This project will be primarily limited to the existing footprint and will include revegetation with native vegetation in the limited areas that are disturbed during the deconstruction and reconstruction process.
The National Park Service is consulting with partners and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the Endangered Species Act.
This proposed project will be open for public comment through March 21, 2020.
