The purpose of this wilderness, backcountry, and comprehensive river management plan/EA is to (a) preserve the wilderness character of Katmai's designated and eligible wilderness, (b) guide the long-term management of visitor use and resources in both wilderness and backcountry areas of Katmai National Park and Preserve and Alagnak Wild River, and (c) protect and enhance the river values of the Alagnak Wild River.
What areas will be included in this plan?
The project area includes designated and eligible wilderness and backcountry areas in Katmai National Park and Preserve and Alagnak Wild River. Frontcountry areas are excluded from this plan.
Why is this plan needed?
The plan/EA is needed to (a) address the effect of concentrated and increasing visitation in the wilderness and backcountry, (b) provide guidance and direction for managing commercial and private visitor use, and (c) safeguard wilderness character in designated and eligible wilderness in the context of changing climate conditions.
