The National Park Service (NPS) developed an Environmental Assessment for the proposed demolition and rebuild of the Maswik South lodging complex, as well as the construction of new roads in the vicinity of Maswik South. The EA was released in October 2018 for a 30-day public comment period. The Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) was signed on February 14, 2019 by Kate Hammond, Acting Regional Director for the Intermountain Region of the NPS.
Maswik South, located in Grand Canyon Village at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, currently consists of six prefabricated, motel-style lodging buildings that provide 90 guest rooms. The buildings were constructed in 1971 and have exceeded their expected useful life of 40 years. Other existing infrastructure at Maswik South, such as sidewalks and roads, is also aging, in poor condition, or not compliant with current laws, codes and/or regulations, including the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
Maswik Laundry Road, which is the primary route to Rowe Well Road, currently traverses through Maswik South between lodging buildings, thereby introducing through-traffic and generally increasing traffic at Maswik South. Other non-visitor uses at or in the vicinity of Maswik South (i.e. commercial bus parking, propane facility, and commercial laundry) also contribute to increased traffic.
The NPS evaluated two alternatives for addressing the purpose and need of the project. These alternatives included a no action and an action alternative. The action alternative included demolishing and rebuilding the Maswik South lodging complex within the same general footprint, and constructing new sections of road (approximately 0.7 miles) in the vicinity of Maswik South. Based on the analysis in the EA, the NPS selected the action alternative, Alternative B - Demolish and Rebuild the Maswik South Complex and Construct New Roads (NPS Preferred Alternative).
Xanterra South Rim, LLC currently operates the Maswik South under a concession contract with the NPS and would complete the Maswik South rebuild under the terms of that contract.
