The National Park Service (NPS) proposes to rehabilitate the Wheeler Peak Campground, a 37-unit campground located at the base of Wheeler Peak in Great Basin National Park. Built between 1966 and 1971, the campground is an outgrowth of the U.S. Forest Service's (USFS) Operation Outdoors, a program initiated in the late 1950's to improve the agency's outdoor recreation facilities. The Wheeler Peak Scenic Area, now Great Basin National Park, was in the USFS's first designated National Forest Scenic Area. Due to its association with Operation Outdoors, the Wheeler Peak Campground is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places as an historic district.
The campground includes an asphalt paved 1.1-mile loop campground road with drive spurs to 37 campsites. Each campsite has a cement center pad, large stone perimeters on three sides and a small stone retaining wall placed into the backing grade. Comfort stations, campfire rings and picnic tables complete the campground amenities.
Today the campground is in a state of disrepair. Flagstone walls, stone perimeter campsite pads, and picnic tables are deteriorating and need repair. Original historic material will be kept and reused wherever possible to maintain the original look and feel of the campground. Many of the fire rings, grills, and other amenities in the campground are in need of replacement. The asphalt roadway requires repaving.
Accessibility improvements to the campground are also needed to be in compliance with updated accessibility guidance and to better serve the changing park visitor demographic. The NPS proposes to rehabilitate three campsites to comply with the requirements of the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standard for camping facilities. To improve restroom accessibility in the campground, the NPS proposes to demolish one of the four campground restrooms and replace it with a custom designed fully accessible restroom installed over a precast vault. An accessible paved parking space adjoining the restroom would also be constructed.
