Oceanside Campground Relocation

The National Park Service (NPS) has finalized its plan for developing a Flexible Design Strategy for Relocating Oceanside Campground for Assateague Island National Seashore. The Environmental Assessment (EA) was finalized and approved on February 25, 2019 through a Finding of No Significant Impact. The purpose of the project is to develop a flexible design strategy and plan for relocating Oceanside campsites over time as they are damaged or lost from future storm events and natural coastal processes. The strategy will allow for anticipated dune migration and protection of infrastructure and facilities while maintaining a safe and enjoyable camping experience for park visitors.

During preparation of the EA, the NPS consulted with federal and state agencies, tribes, interested and affected parties and the general public. Under the selected management action, NPS will continue to offer a camping experience in proximity to the beach as long as possible. The total number of campsites available at the seashore will remain the same; however, as dune migration and natural processes continue to impact the Oceanside Campground, drive-in camping will be gradually relocated to the bayside. Specifics details of this plan are available in the Flexible Design Strategy for Relocating Oceanside Campground Environmental Assessment 2018 and accompanying Finding of No Significant Impact 2019.
