The project will remove five non-native Araucaria Bidwillii trees located in the northeast corner of the Aquatic Park Historic District (at the intersection of Jefferson and Hyde Streets). The trees produce large seed cones (up to 12lbs each) which are an ongoing safety hazard for park visitors. Because the trees are located in a very heavily used area of the park (within several yards of Cable Car plaza), the area containing the trees has been fenced off in an effort to protect the public from the falling seed cones. The Aquatic Park District Cultural Landscape Report states that the Araucaria Bidwillii trees are not historic, and were planted to screen a structure which has since been demolished. During removal a safety zone will be created using barricades, and the public will be detoured away from the area. This portion of the park will be returned to lawn/open space.
