Proposed Fee Changes

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is requesting public comment on two proposals to address fee changes and new amenities being added to our park. Comments on the proposals must be submitted online by December 31, 2023. Feedback provided will help determine how, or if, changes to these opportunities in the park will be implemented.

Proposal 1: The park is proposing the introduction of a reservable backcountry cabin near Twelvemile Beach Campground. This cabin would be open to the public for reservations on Recreation.gov. We are proposing a $35/night fee for this recreation opportunity. Nestled in a beautiful location overlooking Lake Superior on the Twelvemile Beach bluff, this is an off-the-grid shelter with no running water or electricity. Currently, there are no cabins reservable within the boundaries of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This cabin will offer a unique experience for individuals seeking to explore the Pictured Rocks backcountry, while remaining sheltered from harsh weather and other conditions.

Proposal 2: We are proposing an increase in fees for the Au Sable Light Station and Grounds Tour. Currently, the guided tours of these facilities cost $5 cash per person. We are proposing that this tour be moved to Recreation.gov and that tour prices be increased to $10 per person to support increased costs of operation. This fee directly supports facilities and rangers needed to make these tours possible. We anticipate the payment process to be easier as exact cash will not be required, and individuals will be able to make reservations digitally. The museum and light station grounds will still be open to the public without a fee; as previously, individuals will not be able to access the light station itself without joining a tour.
