Pea Ridge National Military Park Cultural Landscape Report

The Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) is the primary document that guides implementation of the park's General Management Plan Environmental Impact Statement. It will synthesize existing baseline data provided by numerous studies, investigations and documents that exist for the park.

The purpose of this project is to provide guidance for preserving the cultural landscape of Pea Ridge National Military Park as the historic site of the Battle of Pea Ridge. This will include guidance on preserving the character of the agrarian and wooded landscape that shaped the course of the battle and the Civil War.

The General Management Plan (GMP) for Pea Ridge National Military Park (Park) was completed in 2006 to provide overall direction for the park for the next 15 to 20 years. A proposal to relocate state Highway 62 with the park boundary was one of the primary drivers of the updated GMP. In addition to the Civil War battle in 1864, the historic Trail of Tears ran through the park.

The park initiated a Vegetation Management Plan (VMP) in October 2012. It is focused on providing detailed guidance on achieving desired vegetative conditions in different areas of the park. The CLR/EA will incorporate the VMP and provide additional guidance for those areas not addressed and establish a preservation philosophy that guides implementation of the GMP Preferred Alternative, enhances resource condition and visitor experience, and streamlines compliance for implementation.
