National Park Service Proposes Entrance Fee Increase to $5
INDEPENDENCE, MO - The National Park Service and Harry S Truman National Historic Site are
seeking public feedback on a proposal to raise the park's entrance fee from $4 to $5 effective in early
2014. If approved, the rate increase would be the site's first rate increase in nine years. The rate
increase would help to alleviate some of the budget shortfalls caused by sequestration. The increased
rate would also help to bring the park's entrance fee more in line with other local attractions.
Currently, the park's $4 entrance fee is the lowest price charged at any historic attraction in
Independence, compared to $6 charged at such sites as the Vaile Mansion, the Bingham-Waggoner
Estate, and the National Frontier Trails Museum. The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum,
managed by the National Archives, currently charges $8 per person.
Public feedback on this proposed fee increase is greatly appreciated. The deadline to respond is
November 1, 2013. Feedback by email should be sent to HSTR_Superintendent@nps.gov. Feedback
by mail should be sent to: Superintendent, Harry S Truman NHS, 223 N. Main Street, Independence,
MO 64050. Feedback by phone can be provided by calling 816-254-2720.
The central feature of Harry S Truman National Historic Site is the historic Truman Home at 219 N.
Delaware. Tours of the Truman Home are included in the entrance fee. Children 15 and younger are
free of charge. Anyone presenting a valid "America the Beautiful" pass can tour the home for free.
Harry Truman, along with his wife Bess, lived in the home for more than five decades. During Mr.
Truman's presidency, the home was also known as the "Summer White House." The site is preserved
in its original condition, and contains more than 50,000 artifacts that once belonged to the Trumans.
