Construct New Comfort Station

Scotts Bluff National Monument » Construct New Comfort Station » Document List

An additional comfort station and watering station will be constructed across the sidewalk and to the northeast of the existing Comfort Station, which is a Histoircal Structure (HS-05). The existing Comfort Station is connected to the Visitor Center and to its east. This new comfort station and watering station will not detract from the cultural landscape of the CCC era buildings as it will be modeled in a similar architectural style to the existing V.C. and Comfort Station yet be different enough that visitors will be able to recognize that the new confort station was bulit at a different time than the CCC era historic buildings. This will be accomplished by matching cedar shake roofing (a roofing project is underway in the park which will ensure proper style and placement techniques are current) and the concrete stucco on existing buildings is very simple and easy to duplicate. The exterior color will be painted to match as well.

Currently the existing Comfort Station is very inadequate for today's use. It is going through a renovation project, but it will not make it handicap accessible. The addition of a new comfort station will not detract from this second layer of historic significance of CCC era buildings. It will be architecturally similar to the historical structure of the nearby existing Comfort Station (HS-05) and Visitor Center/museum (HS-02) and the other existing historic structures, specifically Residence #1 (Headquarters) (HS-03) and Utility Building (HS-04). It will stand alone and not be physically connected to the existing buildings or other nearby structures, such as the adobe walls of the amphiteatre.
