Replace the Devils Island Marina Waterfront and Re-Assemble Boathouse

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore » Replace the Devils Island Marina Waterfront and Re-Assemble Boathouse » Document List

The Devils Island Light Station, built in 1891-1892, is one of seven light stations in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and on the National Register of Historic places for its association with Great Lakes maritime history. Located at the southwest side of the island, the light station docks, stone retaining wall, and boathouse are all contributing structures to this historic site. The Devils Island Marina is also considered critical park infrastructure. When functional, it provides safer harbor in a remote area of Lake Superior and enables crucial park operations such as search and rescue, visitor access, and upkeep of a historic light station and other park assets.

A brutal late fall storm in 2017 severely damaged the dock system, stone wall, and boathouse causing the park to close the area to visitor use, camping, park operations, and partners. Currently the marina is not functional and is dangerous in its current condition.

This project rebuilds the marina waterfront at Devils Island, which includes two docks, and re-assembles the historic boathouse utilizing salvaged historic materials. This project also includes measures to rebuild a destroyed stone and concrete retaining wall. An engineering assessment and analysis of the site was performed in 2018 that included a topside and dive inspection, topographic and bathymetric surveys, and spectral wave analysis. In addition, previous documentation, such as a 2009 Historic Structures Report (HSR) developed by Anderson Hallas and 1991 Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) drawings developed by others, have been consulted to determine the previous form and conditions.
