Constructed at the former site of the Eagledale Ferry Dock, the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial (BIJAEM) marks the historic site where Japanese Americans who were removed from their homes during World War II were rounded up by U.S. soldiers and put on a ferry to Seattle, beginning their forced removal to confinement sites. The Japanese American Confinement Sites award will support the completion of Phase 2 of the BIJAEM "Memorial Wall." Finalization of Phase 2 incorporates the fabrication and installation of the interpretive display materials for the symbolic 276-foot-long wall made of granite, basalt, and Western Red Cedar. A symbolic element is included within the length of the wall, as each foot marks the number of Bainbridge Island Japanese Americans at the start of World War II. The interpretive materials will include images, art, and contextual information. Once completed, the "Memorial Wall" will be supported by other interpretive designs on the site, such as two informational kiosks.
