The proposed Road Shoulder Brushing project consists of removing vegetation on either side of the road shoulder, along the entire 14 miles of paved road system within Great Basin National Park. This includes Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive and Highway 488 from the park boundary to Lehman Caves Visitor Center. This project is necessary to allow motorized and non-motorized operators better visibility and manueverability while travelling on the roadway. The desired outcome for completion of this project will be to provide a safe travel environment for the motorized and non-motorized traveler.
The proposed work is scheduled to begin after May 1, 2011 and continue until all the vegetation along the road shoulders has been treated. Approximately 20 feet on either side of the road will be treated by hand or machinery. This may involve cutting, trimming, brushing, mowing or utilizing a backhoe to remove large and overgrown vegetation. The proposed project is located in a previously disturbed area and will not involve altering the road shoulders. Cut vegetation and debris will be transported to a pit located near Baker Ridge for disposal.
Traffic will be controlled for the safety of park visitors and employees. A short delay of up to 15 minutes may be experienced.
