Canal Quarters Interpretive Program Environmental Assessment/Assessment of Effects

The National Park Service (NPS), Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal National Historical Park (NHP), in partnership with the C&O Canal Trust (Trust), is evaluating the C&O Canal Quarters Interpretive Program (CQIP) pilot project for validation and possible expansion to additional historic buildings. The CQIP invites visitors to stay overnight in one of the park's historic buildings for a unique interpretive experience. The program began as a pilot project in November 2009, when three historic lockhouses became available for public registrations. In 2011, an additional 3 historic lockhouses were included in the pilot program totaling 6 lockhouses. It was jointly developed by NPS and the Trust in order to elevate the level of interpretation of the park's historic buildings and associated structures.

The purpose of the project is to validate and expand the pilot CQIP to additional historic buildings. This current pilot program allows visitors to intimately interact with the park's resources by staying overnight in a historic building. Important interpretive themes are addressed through this program regarding the history of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. These interpretive themes are conveyed through NPS developed interpretive media and period appropriate furnishings provided by the Trust.
