Trail and Backcountry Management Plan

Redwood National Park » Trail and Backcountry Management Plan » Document List

We are pleased to announce that we have completed the initial planning for a long-term program to expand the trail system in Redwood National and State Parks. The expansion will add 9 new hiking trails, designate additional routes as mountain bike trails, increase opportunities for backcountry camping, relocate one of the equestrian camps along the Orick Horse Trails, and create trail links between the national park and adjacent public lands in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. The West Side Access Road along the southwestern boundary of the park in Humboldt County will be opened for public use as in conjunction with development of an equestrian trailhead on the A-9 deck for improved access to the Orick Horse Trails.

We have documented our decision for the trail construction program in a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). We have also prepared an errata that includes minor editorial corrections and response to general comments received during the public comment period on the plan.

The Trail Plan Summary lists the trails and backcountry camps to be constructed, and includes a history of regional trail planning and proposed trails in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Parks.
