Project Location: This project is located at the Visitor Center of Wupatki National Monument, which is 35 miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona.

Background: The existing Wupatki Sewer System Consists of three (3) evaporative lagoons, which were poorly designed and constructed. They are a constant operational problem because the leveling system between the lagoons is undersized. A variety of problems with blocked piping and general poor design have resulted in violations of Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) regulations. Aside from the operational concerns the lagoons in the viewshed of the Wupatki Visitor Center.

Project Description: This project will replace the treatment and disposal method for the sewer system. The contractor will remove the existing evaporative lagoon system structures (i.e. fencing, manholes, pits…) and fill in the evaporative lagoons. The contractor will install one (1) 12,000 gallon septic tank, one (1) 3,000 gallon recirculation tank, a fabric filtrations system, approximately 25 LF of 6" manifold pipe, and 608 LF of drainfield chambers with 1-1/4" PVC laterals. All the sewer structures removed will be disposed of at an approved location.
