ORV Use in the Silver Salmon Creek Area of Lake Clark National Park

The National Park Service (NPS) is considering authorizing off-road vehicle (ORV) use on existing trails in the Silver Salmon Creek (SSC) area of Lake Clark National Park for inholder travel.

Many privately owned properties within Lake Clark National Park at SSC access their inholdings directly from the Cook Inlet beach outside the Park boundary; however, alternative or improved access across park lands is often needed during high tides and inclement weather to reach inholdings from aircraft landing areas along the beach. Existing trails were created before the park was established.

Twelve landowners currently use ORVs at SSC to access their property and for other purposes. Two of those landowners use ORVs in support of sportfishing and bear viewing businesses. None of the land owners have been issued an authorization to operate ORVs on park lands. Authorizing such use on certain trails while reaffirming that other park land remains closed to ORV use would accommodate landowner travel while protecting park resources.
