Dear Interested Party:

Pecos National Historical Park proposes to initiate a Hazardous Fuel Reduction Project (PEPC project # 22555) on park lands within San Miguel County. The purpose of the project is to manually and mechanically treat approximately 200 acres of park lands in culturally sensitive areas to reduce hazardous fuel loads and to restore historic landscapes. This project is intended to reduce hazardous fuel loads to a manageable level in order to protect lands, cultural resources, and facilities owned by the National Park Service and/or private citizens in the event of a wildland fire originating on park lands. Secondarily, treatment will improve the condition of park cultural landscapes by restoring historic pastures. The pastures have been encroached upon by trees over the past 15-30 years. The project area includes specific cultural resources in historic pasture lands. The mechanical/manual treatment of hazardous fuels will include a selective thinning of fuels around identified cultural sites along with essentially a clearing of trees encroaching upon historic park pasture lands. This work will increase manageability of fire behavior and improve the condition of the park cultural landscape. The park's management team has concluded that no adverse effect to cultural resources that are eligible or on the National Register will occur as a result of conducting this project.
