Fort Necessity National Battlefield was created by Congress in 1931. The park was established to commemorate the Battle of Fort Necessity, the opening battle of the French and Indian War, which took place in the Great Meadows on July 3, 1754. These events helped shaped George Washington's development as a military leader and statesman. In 1961 the state donated additional land to preserve the historic setting. The Mount Washington Tavern was included in this donation; consequently the history of the National Road is included in park exhibits and programs. Fort Necessity is located in Farmington, Pennsylvania, 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The site consists of 903 acres.

Fort Necessity National Battlefield has no up-to-date interpretive planning documents. The most recent "Statement for Interpretation" was written in 1994, it is outdated. It does not include the most recent scholarship on the French and Indian War. There are no up to date planning documents incorporating the Fort Necessity and National Road Interpretation and Education Center opened in October 2005.

The park needs to develop and implement a Long Range Interpretive Plan which will define its goals and objectives in wide variety of interpretive services, facilities and educational programs, while protecting and preserving park resources. Having a Comprehensive Interpretive Plan is critical to the park's overall management of its interpretive operations if the park is to meet its GPRA goals for visitor experience and understanding of the purpose and significance of the park.

The result of this project will be a long range interpretive plan that provides park management and staff with a concise plan to direct all interpretive operations. The plan will be used as a reference for identifying staffing requirements for park sites as well identifying partners and stakeholders.
