Cultural Landscape Report - Quincy Unit

Keweenaw National Historical Park » Cultural Landscape Report - Quincy Unit » Document List

The intent of this combined Cultural Landscape Report and Environmental Assessment (CLR/EA) is to guide treatment and use of the above-ground resources associated with the significant historic landscapes within the Quincy Unit of Keweenaw National Historical Park.

The report contains historical research and documentation of the Quincy Mine landscape, inventory and mapping of existing conditions, an analysis of landscape character and integrity, and proposed landscape treatment alternatives with impact analysis for the study area. The development of this report has been a cooperative effort by park staff and a consulting team of Quinn Evans|Architects and Woolpert, LLC. Considerable discussion with park stakeholders has also been integral to the development of this report.

Most of the Quincy Unit's 1,100 acres of varied copper mining resources falls within a National Historic Landmark District (NHL) that is 90% privately owned. Private ownership of historic resources, multiple political jurisdictions, and a lack of local land use requirements creates dynamic conditions and numerous challenges for appropriate and effective management of the unit's cultural landscape.

The final product will provide specific management and design guidelines for NPS-owned properties. Guidelines and objectives for partner sites, public properties, and private properties will be more general and guided by working cooperatively with each respective group of stakeholders.

Comments are encouraged and appreciated. Reviewers are asked to provide online or written comments about the report to the park no later than September 11, 2009. Following the public review, comments will be addressed and necessary adjustments made before distributing the final report and environmental decision document. Thank you in advance for your participation in this important process that will result in a higher level of preservation and stewardship for the Copper Country's rich heritage.

Sincerely,

James P. Corless
Superintendent
