North Fork Lost Man Creek Fish Passage Project

Redwood National Park » North Fork Lost Man Creek Fish Passage Project » Document List

The National Park Service has approved a proposal to remove failing undersized culverts and replace them with a bridge on a former logging road that is part of the Lost Man Creek-Holter Ridge hike-bike trail north of Orick. The road is also used for administrative vehicle access to watershed and forest restoration project sites. Replacing the culverts with a bridge will improve habitat for threatened fish species by removing an obstacle to fish passage to spawning areas upstream. Unstable road sections will also be removed to prevent future damage to fish habitat. This project will be accomplished by a grant from the California Department of Fish and Game Fisheries Restoration Grant Program for restoration of salmonid habitat in California streams.

The Lost Man Creek-Holter Ridge hike-bike trail is part of the former Geneva Road, and runs between the Lost Man Creek picnic area and Holter Ridge Road on the eastern boundary of the national park. The project area is located on the North Fork of Lost Man Creek about 600 feet upstream of the confluence with Lost Man Creek and about one mile upstream from the Lost Man Creek picnic area. The Lost Man Creek segment of the hike-bike trail will be closed for about one month beginning September 15, 2009 while heavy equipment work is underway. The project is expected to be completed by March 2010.

See the approved Finding of No Significant Impact for a summary of the conservation planning and impact analyses conducted for this project.
