Dear Friends:

During November 2006 flood events, numerous rocks, mud slides and flooding occurred on the west side of Glacier National Park, damaging the Going-to-the-Sun Road. A large amount of debris came down Logan Creek, plugging the bridge and forcing the water to re-route to the east, damaging the road. The road was repaired and the debris was cleared from underneath the bridge, however, there still remains a large amount of debris in the creek. During a future flood event, it is likely the bridge will become blocked again.

Glacier National Park and the Western Federal Lands Highway staff are developing a number of alternatives that will be analyzed. At this time they include, enlarging the bridge, channelizing the creek and or developing additional water conveyances on either side of the existing bridge. Due to the impacts that would occur with any of these alternatives, the significance of Logan Creek Bridge as one of the 17 features that contributed to the road's listing as a national historic landmark; the presence of bull trout, a federally listed species and National Park Service policy regarding stream management, an Environmental Assessment (EA) will be prepared to analyze the alternatives.

Scoping is an early part of the environmental process. This is an opportunity for you, the public or other agencies to provide any concerns and comments you may have at this point or to suggest any alternatives that should be considered in an EA.

Before including your address, phone number, e-mail address, or other personal identifying information in your comment, you should be aware that your entire comment – including your personal identifying information – may be made publicly available at any time. While you can ask us in your comment to withhold your personal identifying information from public review, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so.

Comments can be provided directly through the Park's planning website at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/parkHome.cfm?parkID=61 or sent by mail to Superintendent, Glacier National Park, Attn: Logan Creek Bridge EA, P.O. Box 128, West Glacier, Montana 59936. Comments are due by September 10, 2007.

Thank you for your continued support and interest in Glacier National Park.

Sincerely,
