Currently in the 14 campgrounds in Yosemite National Park over 90% of the 1450 site markers are non-compliant to DO 52C which established new sign standards in 2006. In the 1970's cement logs were installed as site markers with stenciled site numbers. These are high maintenance markers that need constant attention which defers our maintenance staff from other needed work/repairs. The non-reflective site markers have been a continuing problem with our visitors, visitor protection and campground staff. A comprehensive replacement project is needed to comply with DO 52C, National Park Service UniGuide Sign System and standardize our campgrounds. The project will be planned in consultation with the Archeology Staff. Generally, new boundary markers will be replaced in the same location as existing markers, thereby avoiding new ground disturbance. If new ground disturbance in archeological sites is unavoidable, an archeologist will monitor the posthole excavations.Due to historic presersevation issues, Camp 4 is excluded from this project. Posts are placed approximately 18-24 inches into the ground.
