Replace Diversion Ring and Install Security Fence around Water Tank

Hovenweep National Monument » Replace Diversion Ring and Install Security Fence around Water Tank » Document List

This project is a contract to install 300 linear feet of 6 foot chain link fence and replace the 225 linear foot diversion ring around the park-owned 40,000 gallon water tank. The water tank is the sole water source for the monument and serves 35,000 visitors, 9 or more employees and 5 employee residences. This project will use both contracted and NPS labor.

In June of 2004, an environmental sanitary survey was done by a Public Health Service officer for Utah. The survey specified that a security fence be installed around the 40,000 gallon water tank at Hovenweep. This project will result in compliance with federal, state and homeland security regulations and visitor and employee safety.

The diversion ring is inoperable at its present design specification as the slope grade is greater than the present ring can handle. It is allowing water to overflow, settle and rust the bottom of the 40,000 gallon water tank. By removing the existing diversion ring, re-grading the slope, and installing a new, upgraded diversion ring, water will not settle and corrode the water tank.

The water tank was vandalized twice in fiscal year 2005 due to the ease of accessibility. Installing a security fence will mitigate unwanted access to and possible contamination of Hovenweep's water supply. There are no expected impacts to employees or visitors.
